Delaware & Hudson Railway began operations in 1829 when the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company decided to start building railroads. Its first railroad, which was one of the first railways in the US, was built in northern Pennsylvania. D&H ended operations in 1991 when it was purchased by Canadian Pacific.

As railroads became a popular form of transportation rail was built along side or replaced the many canals. Much of the Delaware and Hudson Canel was replaced by railway, the remaining fragments are now historical sites.
The Delaware & Hudson Raill Trail, now a recreational trail, runs along the old railroad bed of the Delaware & Hudson Railroad from Rutland, VT with Albany, NY.
